Many people think of horror as something that’s only for October, but you can get the hell scared out of you any day of the year. UK’s Horrorcon last weekend proved as much. However, now that it’s over and you might’ve had your fill of frights, but October is still far away. However, that doesn’t mean the frightening fun has to end!

Events like are all over Britain, plus they’re a good excuse to get out and talk with likeminded people in person rather than behind a screen in the dark after a good watch of a new favourite movie or show. You can also go out and meet some of the people who help make your experience what it is. At some of these you might even broaden your horizon and find terrifying media you’d never thought to look for!

1.

GASP! Horror Festival: 17-18th June 2023

Pop over to Manchester to take part in a new kind of horror festival, one that promises to bring more diversity to the table. GASP! offers a place at the campfire for underrepresented communities such as POC, women, people with disabilities and LGBTQ+. Over two days, these voices will be showing their takes on the genre in both short and feature-length films. From a short film showcase of women in horror to full new features to queer classics, GASP! seeks to bring a diverse experience in more ways than one.

2.

Frightfest: 24th-28th August 2023

Conceived in Leicester Square, Frightfest’s goal is to provide a horror/ fantasy festival with a community that travels from all around the world to enjoy the atmosphere. The organisers promise a five-day film extravaganza of both feature length and short films. With ticket prices to be announced soon, it’s one to keep an eye on.

3.

Horrorcon Scotland 2023: 21st October 2023

If you missed the May 20th Horrorcon you can still take a trip up north to experience it in Aberdeen. You’ll experience the best that Scottish horror and thriller has to offer, connecting with both established voices such as Hellraiser actor Simon Badford. See a world of traders in their stalls or watch screenings of both new and upcoming films like I Am Rage. With wheelchair accessibility and relaxed spaces, the Beach Ballroom is full of surprises!

4.

Hull Horror Fest UK: 28th October 2023

Horror Fest has always boasted film/TV guests and 2023 offers more of the same. For Stephen King fans, you’ll get to meet Jarred Blancard from the 1990 IT mini-series, as well as Elodie Grace Orkin from Stranger Things for the more modern enjoyers. You’ll see a variety of cosplays, along with replicas of your favourite franchises for photos. With advance tickets out now, it’s an event you can enjoy right on the cusp of Halloween.

5.

Horror On Sea: 12-14th and 19-21st January 2024

Initially beginning as a way to bring business to Essex in the winter, this horror film festival became a mainstay that’s been running for 10 years. Horror On Sea is a celebration of all independent horror and for many will be their first time horrifying a large audience. Horror On Sea brings film screenings both new and old to the south end, and has become a bastion of low to no-budget horror.
